Named by Musical America as the 2018 Composer of the Year as well as the most-performed composer of his generation, Grammy-winning composer Mason Bates is widely renowned for his pioneering practice of creating music for conventional performing forces enhanced by electronic sounds. Of the two works presented in this remarkable album, Mass Transmission - in its world premiere recording - is a particularly winning example of Bates use of electronica, blended here with music for mixed choir and organ. A contrasting work, Sirens achieves mesmerizing vocal effects through its complex scoring for 12-part a cappella choir. Grammy-winning choirmaster Ragnar Bohlin and his superb chamber choir Cappella SF deliver astonishing performances that will not only thrill Bates growing legions of fans, but serve as an ideal introduction to Bates unique electronics-enhanced music for those unfamiliar with his art.

“Cappella SF’s Light of Gold mixes new and old, with a couple of well-known Willcocks arrangements of traditional carols alongside a Swedish sequence from the likes of Fredrik Sixten, Folke Bohlin and Gustaf Nordqvist. These are well-drilled performances, the better-known works beautifully shaped and the newer music modern without being rebarative. Ward Swingle’s truly imaginative arrangement of Gaudete and David Conte’s onomatopoeic Patapan are special moments.” David Threasher, Gramophone Magazine
“Cappella SF's impeccable musicianship is presented in the best possible sound. Captured in San Francisco's St. Ignatius Church by David v.R. Bowles…the blend of direct sound and natural resonance strikes me as ideal. … Bowles and Rosenberger deserve kudos for the naturalism of the results.” Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile Magazine

The choral writing, and indeed the realization in this performance, is deeply set and richly toned. The excellent recording captures the Capella SF's sound to perfection. This is a tremendous disc, effectively a celebration of great poetry in song. Recommended.
